Astrologer

In this career guide, you’ll learn everything you need to know about astrology as a career, from roles and responsibilities, to work environment and roadmap to becoming an Astrologer.

Who's an Astrologer?

Are you fascinated with stars, constellations, moons and other celestial bodies in the sky? Are you interested in learning how to foresee their relationship with the events occurring in our lives? If so, consider astrology as a career.

An astrologer is a professional who predicts one’s future by analysing the position of planets, and the sun and moon with relation to various events in our lives. As an astrologer, you will create a horoscope for your clients on the basis of their birth date and time and accordingly provide remedies to help them deal with their problems.

What will you do?

Preparing client horoscopes.

You will be responsible for preparing horoscopes for the clients on the basis of significant events and relevant times in their life. You will use this horoscope to analyse personality traits and their future.

Example: You will take down birth time and date of a client, understand the position of the planets, sun and the moon and then prepare their horoscope.

Predicting the future.

On the basis of the horoscope prepared, you will predict your client’s future. This will help you determine their finances, career, health and love life.

Example: Looking at the client’s horoscope you can indicate if he/she will suffer from any disease or accident in the future.

Offering appropriate remedy.

Once you have analysed the horoscope, you must offer remedies/solutions to help your client overcome their problem.

Example: You may ask the client to worship a specific god on a particular day or ask him to fast on any day of the week to help him better the position of certain planets in his chart.

Offering explanations.

You will be answerable to your clients. On the basis of the horoscope, relation of the zodiac signs, place of birth of the client etc, you will have to give them appropriate explanations for the various occurrences in their lives.

Example: If your client is suffering from a financial loss, you will have to tell him why that is the case and then help them overcome it.

You can consider a fellowship with a professional who specialises in astrology, numerology or tarot card reading. They will teach you the principles of these ancient subjects. At this stage, you will address only one client at a time. This is your opportunity to enhance your knowledge on the subject as well as improve your skills in communication.

Experienced Astrologist

Once you are familiar with the basic principles of astrology and how to conduct astrological readings, you are ready to start your own practice. You can also continue working with an established professional, conducting seminars for their clients and addressing large groups. By this stage, you will have built the confidence and interpretive skills to even handle your own clients.

Freelance Astrologist

Astrology is a flexible career option. Once you have established yourself as an expert in the market, you can conduct seminars and arrange for stints with a newspaper, magazine, or TV channel by providing editorial content on the subject.

Pursuing your career locally VS abroad

With origins in India, astrology has emerged as a lucrative career option in the country. Students inclined on this career generally pursue a BA in Astrology, followed by an MA from a reputed institute. The average course fee can range from INR 5000 to INR 2,00,000 depending on the institute. Students can also earn a diploma at the price of just INR 10000. Knowledge of Sanskrit is a must here, which can be acquired through a BA degree. Astrologists who wish to write for publications can also choose to do a course in creative writing through a certified programme or an online course.

Astrological science is not just limited to Indian borders. However, in order to pursue a career in astrology abroad, one must be trained and certified from relevant institutes. Students also prefer to start with affiliated courses like psychology, philosophy, or creative writing if being a freelance astrologist is what they desire. The fees for these courses range around INR 20,000 to INR 40,000 at a university while options are also available for online classes and distance learning via email. What are your career options?

Traditional Astrology

Traditional astrology mainly refers to the type of astrology that was practised in the West before the 20th century. It is divided into four categories – Natal, Horary, Electional, and Mundane. As a Natal astrologer, you would examine an individual’s birth chart and makes predictions on the exact time of birth. As a Horary astrologer, you would focus on an individual’s horoscope. Electional astrology would require you to delve into astrological magic and talisman, while studying Mundane astrology would help you predict events on a larger scale. As of today, natal astrology and mundane astrology are more widely practised.

Predictive Astrology

Natal astrology relies on the exact moment of one’s birth in order to determine personality traits and the overall growth of the individual, while predictive astrology is the branch that foretells the future of the individual or predicts the outcome of a certain event in their lives. Even in this branch of astrology, the birthdate plays an important role as you would use it as the origin point to create an astrological chart for your clients, thus determining what the future holds for them.

Medical Astrology

Each of the astrological signs is associated with different parts of the human body. This branch of astrology is based on the correlation of the different body parts with each other and each organ with a certain symbolism. To practice this type of astrology, you must have knowledge of both astrology and medicine. A bachelor’s degree in biology would come in handy here. Thus, you will then be able to determine the physiology of the body and the diseases associated with them through the influence of the Sun, Moon, and other planets in the Solar System.

Financial Astrology

While financial astrology has different interpretations all over the world, this branch of astrology is mainly used to elevate the financial development of an individual or a group. You would relate the movements of celestial bodies to events in financial markets. Based on your interpretations, you would provide advice to your clients for specific financial situations or whether they should make an investment. You would also determine the path that should be taken in order for your clients to achieve their ultimate financial goals.

Psychological Astrology

The impact of astrology is also felt on an individual’s psychological state. Here, you would connect Carl Jung’s archetypal traits to an individual’s exact moment of birth in order to determine their needs and motivations. While predictive astrological insights are rarely used here, this branch of astrology aims to establish the individual’s root problems and determine how they manifest themselves in their lives. In theory, this can be viewed as both a personality theory and a diagnostic tool.

Mundane Astrology

This is a branch of Vedic astrology. It deals with the planetary influences through zodiac signs and planetary movements in the charts of cities, nations, organisations, corporations, businesses, etc. Here, you would aim to understand the constant fluctuations in society with respect to political and financial changes and the relationship of a country with the rest of the world. While you would not focus on an individual, the changes happening around people are likely to affect your findings, thus, Mundane astrology becomes a topic of interest to everyone.
