Stand-up Comedian

Stand-up is a style of comedy performed for a live audience, usually by speaking directly to them.

Who's a Standup Comedian?

Want to be the next Kaneez Surkha, Kanan Gill, Vir Das, or Lilly Singh? Do you have it in you to have people in splits, laughing until they can barely breathe? Do you think you can woo an audience with your punchlines and funny jibes? If so, consider a career in stand-up comedy.

As a stand-up comedian, you would try to put a humorous spin to everything you do and say. Whether you are talking about the current political landscape of the country or about the typical Indian family, everything you do and say will have to have a major humour factor.  You could perform at comedy clubs, bars, college events, theatres, or just about anywhere you want! Depending on your interests, you could do observational, satirical, anecdotal comedy, etc.

What will you do?

Researching topics.

You will have to conduct thorough research on the topic that you plan to talk about. Especially if you are doing a topical comedy set, facts are extremely important.

Example: Hasan Minhaj, on his show Patriot Act, always ensures to talk about numbers and statistics when discussing any issue. He then brings a humorous spin to his set using these facts.

Understanding your audience.

The humour behind your sets is largely dependent on how the audience receives it. You will need to understand the audience you are performing for, and accordingly come up with something.

Example: If you were performing at a school event versus if you were performing at a gig at the bar. While the bottom line is that you must be funny, how you go about it will be very different.

Creating content.

Once you have conducted your research and know what audience you will be performing for, it’s time to create your set. This will involve adding punchlines, editing out pieces and deciding how you’re going to deliver.

Example: If you are planning to write an observational piece of comedy, you will write about a daily activity that most people perform, but try to look at it from an unusual perspective.

Performing trial shows or rehearsals.

You will be performing before a live audience. You need to be prepared for this and therefore keep rehearsing your set. Some comedians also perform trial shows where there test their content against and audience to see how it works.

Example: Most comedians hold trial shows for free at bars, cafes, etc.

Entertaining the audience.

While comedy holds your set together, there are other elements too that you can use to bring in a higher entertainment factor. Elements like your costume, a prop or some sound effects only enhance the show.

Example: Lily Singh, in many of her videos, assumes the character of her mother and father – complete with costume and voice modulation – to build a situation-based comedy set.

Performing at live shows.

You will be performing in front of a live audience. You cannot take back what is said, nor cut out or enhance anything you want. You must make sure you are clear and confident. You must also ensure that everything you require is set in place.

Example: You will have to make sure that you have tested the mic, your costumes, the lights, the sound, etc., before you take the stage to ensure smooth sailing.

Where will you work?

Gigs

You wouldn’t have a specific work environment unless you have a contract with a club or other company to exclusively work with them. You could work at restaurants, bars, open mics, etc., as part of the entertainment offered. If you are an established comedian, you could even set your own gigs up.

TV/Radio/Internet

If you are really good at what you do, you could get picked up by TV show or radio producers and get a show of your own or assist others on theirs. You could also start your own show through streaming platforms like SoundCloud, YouTube, etc.

Events

You could work with an events company, where you would work at the events the organise. Or work on a freelance basis where people could hire you for a particular event such as an office annual day, a high-profile party, etc.
