It’s that time of the year. March Madness is here. This means exam fever has whipped up a storm in your life. There’s an enormous amount of pressure on you and a surprising number of obstacles in your way. How are you supposed to battle this scary beast and all its legion of ‘dementors’ – the deadly villains called Stress, Fear, and the evilest of them all – Distraction?

STUDY SEASON

We get it. It’s a crazy time. But you don’t have to face this alone. We’re about to give you the power to get the better of distraction and focus on what needs to be.

Unless you are an absolute, indestructible genius, chances are, you find yourself being distracted easily. It’s all around you. And you want to study; you really want to. But before you dive into your revisions with absolute focus, you need to get rid of all the distractions around you. We’ll tell you how.

Prepping for exams can be very stressful, but there’s one test you don’t need to prepare for at all – Mentoria’s holistic career assessment test! Mentoria helps you figure out which career best suits your personality, skills and interests so you can find your perfect fit!

Clear the Clutter

A cluttered desk is your first enemy. The mess lures your eyes away from your books. Before you start studying, clear out the entire space. Neatly organise what’s left behind and give your mother yet another reason to be proud of you.

Give the Internet a Break

Your phone is a deadly adversary. While on one hand, it instantly clears any doubts you might have (about your studies, of course), on the other, it lures you into the deadly abyss of social media. Switch it off along with all your other devices and lock them away. If you have doubts, note them for later reference. If you need music to focus, keep a playlist ready beforehand and stash the device far, far away from you. You don’t want to pull an Alice and fall down the playlist-making rabbit hole!

Secure the Perimeter

secure your perimeter

You’re prepping for the most important exam of your life; you can ask for absolute and total silence. Find a quiet room or corner to study in. Ask people not to disturb you for a few hours. While it’s difficult to achieve absolute silence, even a relatively quiet zone will help you focus. So build a blanket fort or put up a ‘No Entry’ sign on your door; but demand pin-drop silence.

Career confusion making noise in your mind? Mentoria’s expert career counsellors can help you with that. We provide personalised step-by-step guidance to help you discover your ideal career.

Plan it Right

Make a study plan the previous night, so you know exactly what you’re going to do. Allow yourself frequent breaks, and make sure you’ve earned them. Plan time to clear doubts as well. Make sure your revision is broken down into clear slots, so you don’t waste time wondering where to begin.

Go to Bed

go to bed early

Staying awake all night won’t do you good. Your mind is stressed enough as is; you’re putting it through a lot of hard work during the day, and it needs to rest and recover. Get 6-8 hours of sleep every night. Wake up early with a fresh mind and begin your revisions. If you’re more of a night owl than a morning sparrow, finish a bulk of your revisions at night and go through pointers once you wake up.

Turn Off Your Notifications

Every student’s worst enemy is constant notifications and text messages. In order to avoid unwanted distractions, close tabs on your computer that are not important and set your phone on silent or “Do Not Disturb” mode. Blocking or disabling time-wasting websites and apps can help you avoid online distractions.

Reward Yourself

A little motivation can go a long way toward helping you reach your goals. Setting up a reward system can turn out to be a great way to encourage yourself to finish a task. If you finish an essay without being distracted, reward yourself by taking a nap or drinking your favourite beverage.

Take Breaks

Set a timer for 30 minutes to an hour. Make yourself work efficiently for a manageable period of time. Then take a break – watch a video or have a snack. You can get a lot of goals accomplished in a short period of time if you truly focus. This can get you to finish work more quickly and you will have more time to yourself later to do the things you prefer to do.

It’s not going to be an easy battle, but armed with these hacks, you will be able to defeat distraction and move on to the final fight – exams! But you’ve got what it takes to slay this beast, because you’re smart, focused, and nothing can get in the way of your journey to Vacationland.
