Forget what everyone tells you; academic life is hard these days. You’ve got subjects to study, classes to attend, tests to attempt, classes to go for, extracurricular activities to participate in… the list is endless! If you somehow manage to rise above all of this, you have to find time for friends and family. What happens to your ‘me time’ then? If you decide to take a mini-holiday to get away from it all, you’re only going to worry about all that’s piling up and waiting for you back home. But your body needs a break, or else it will protest and fall sick. What do you do then?

First, take a slow, deep breath, hold it for three seconds and release it slowly. That sigh of relief can be followed by these simple coping tips we’ve gathered for you.

We at Mentoria understand the importance of easing the mind. When career confusion has you down, Mentoria’s holistic psychometric career assessment test can help you find clarity on your ideal career based on your unique interests, skills and personality.

You’re ALWAYS Tired

quote by Banksy

What’s the issue?

Given all that you’re trying to cram into your regular day, fatigue is a guaranteed outcome. Your brain is tired, as are your muscles and organs. Constant fatigue could be your body’s way of reacting to the day-to-day pressure.

How can I cope with it?

There are two ways to deal with such a situation. First, eat right, and get enough exercise and sleep. Your mom isn’t all that wrong when she keeps nagging you to eat or sleep – after all, moms know best, don’t they? Snack on healthy stuff like nuts and fruits, if the hunger strikes in between meals. A little bit of exercise also goes a long way too. If you don’t have time to hit the gym, you can take the stairs instead of the lift next time or start taking the cycle to school. Your health comes above everything else.

The second is to take planned breaks. Between your classes and tuitions and extracurricular activities and homework and projects and whatnot, you’re bound to feel the stress. Plan every minute of your day well and allow time for breaks. Don’t worry, your breaks can be productive too! Just remember that you’ll need a healthy body and a healthy mind to beat the pressure!

Here Comes the Stress!

quote by albus dumbledore

What’s the issue?

Academically, there’s already a lot on your plate. But you also have a social life and a family to deal with. Then there’s the whole identity/confidence crisis every teenager goes through. Managing all these expectations, pulling all-nighters to cope with the workload, crash diets, long hours in front of a screen and several other things can bring about stress.

How can I cope with it?

As much as I hate to be the bearer of bad news, here it goes – stress is something you just can’t escape from. Even as an adult, it follows you around and find a way to be a part of your life. The more you run from it, the bigger it gets. Instead, tackle it head-on. Come up with solutions, tackle the tough parts of life first, and take time out for yoga and meditation. Hang out with friends who don’t stress you out. Remember – you cannot control what happens to you; you can only control your reaction to it. The energy you spend worrying about things you cannot change can actually be used in taking a nap or playing a round of PUBG. If it’s too much to handle, approach a mentor or a therapist for professional help.

Time Is Not Your Greatest Friend.

quote by Mark Cuban

What’s the issue?

24 hours are just not enough for a day anymore. Even if you were to sacrifice a few nights here and there to get work done, it won’t be enough. And no one seems to have created a Time Turner for the Muggle world just yet.

How can I cope with it?

When time turns its back on you, make planning your best friend. You already know what’s on your plate. Break these tasks into smaller tasks and treat yourself to a good snack or watch a YouTube every time you complete a task. Be warned, though; your breaks need to be timed too, or before you know it, you’re lost on YouTube and your carefully laid out plans have gone for a toss.

There’s Always a Sharmaji Ka Beta in Your Life.

quote by Shrek

What’s the issue?

If you don’t personally know a Sharmaji ka Beta, you’ve come across the memes. Like him or hate him but there’s no escaping this ‘ideal child’. Your parents are constantly talking about how a certain someone is better than you. So is the rest of your family, your teachers and even your society!

How can I cope with it?

Acknowledge and accept that no two people are ever going to be the same. You may come with a set of skills that the proverbial Sharmaji ka Beta would never be able to develop. Find out what you’re good at, how you learn best, and where your expertise lies. Compare your achievements to your own past performances and set goals based on YOUR abilities. Once you’ve figured out what makes you tick, Sharmaji ka Beta got nothing on you!

At Mentoria, we don’t care about Sharmaji ka Beta. Our top priority is helping you discover how your unique skills, abilities and interests intersect to find your ideal career. Speak to Mentoria’s expert career counsellors for  guidance today.

What If You Fail?

quote by Don Draper

What’s the issue?

We’ve always lived a life that celebrates successes and frowns upon failures. But failures are a part and parcel of life! Failures teach you the right lessons, show you how to improve and lead you to success. It is important for you to know that it’s absolutely okay to fail, as long as you learn from each failure.

How can I cope with it?

Everyone loses at some point. “Heroes” who win “all the time” only exist in stories. Even the world’s greatest leaders have gone through failure at some point in their lives. Don’t let failure dishearten you or stress you out. Celebrate that failure, make a list of all the things it taught you, and try again until you succeed. Trust us when we say it’ll work out for you!

I Don’t Get Distract — OMG A PUPPY!

quote by Tyrion Lannister

What’s the issue?

Have you ever picked up your phone to simply check something and ended up spending around an hour scrolling aimlessly through apps instead? Friends, families, even brands and other influencers are constantly bombarding you with all kinds of interesting content. You’d have to be some kind of saint not to get distracted by everything out there.

How can I cope with it?

Take control of your time and keep distractions away before they take over your day. Plan time for your distractions. During all other hours, keep your devices away and everything else – even water and stationery – close by. While a basic internet search will give you a hundred ways to avoid distraction, only you have the power to say NO and focus on the task at hand.

What Does the Future Hold?

quote by Michael Scott

What’s the issue?

You’re barely even an adult, but you’re expected to decide what you plan to do with your adulting life. To make it even harder, you have over 12000 options to choose from and you just about know 50 of them. Your parents might have a plan for you, but it’s not what appeals to you. Your teachers, relatives, friends and neighbours might have their own suggestions as well.

Try engineering! Become a doctor! Forget about music and dance! Writing will never pay you!
