A majority of your employees today are millennials. They come with a very different set of values and expectations, and keeping them constantly engaged and motivated is no easy task. It has to be at the top of your priority list or else you’ll be stuck in a loop of replacing team members who move on for better opportunities.

Job satisfaction, contrary to popular belief, has nothing to do with higher pay, but rather involvement, challenges, achievements, and the like. In a study conducted by the Economic Times last May, an alarming 8 out of 10 employees in India are not satisfied with their job. Here are seven ways you can ensure that your organisation doesn’t fall victim to such statistics.

Do employees seem confused and lacking in direction? Mentoria’s holistic psychometric career assessment test could help them find clarity for their career based on their unique strengths, interests and personality!

1. Employee Recognition and Awards

Employee Happiness

Your team members’ achievements and accomplishments need to be acknowledged. Don’t wait for yearly anniversaries or milestones to appreciate your employees for their hard work. Recognition programmes and awards are a great way to appreciate your employees and encourage them to better themselves. Programmes like ‘Employee of the Month’ or ‘Brightest Idea of the Quarter’, can do wonders to the morale of your team members. You can convey your deep gratitude and appreciation. Add precise details about what the individual accomplished to earn the award for added support. These programmes keep the employees connected by celebrating their accomplishments and creating a fun and competitive working environment.

2. Keep the Feedback Cycle Going

The word feedback written on a piece of paper.

This might sound basic in principle, however, even if you already provide feedback, you need to make sure that it is regular and relevant. Make sure your employees know how effective their work is and how they can do better. Additionally, however uncomfortable it may get, don’t hold back on the negative feedback. Your employees appreciate it, as it helps them grow. Meanwhile, you must also understand that it is not only about criticising. Employee feedback is intended to point employees to practises and resources that will help them perform their jobs better.

3. Encourage Fun at Work

Having a meal.

Millennials won’t be content with sitting at their desks and working all day long. They need breaks, they need to have fun, and so do you. Build a casual work atmosphere that allows people the freedom to take breaks, let their hair down and have fun while they work. As this improves productivity, you can look after your employees and encourage them to get more done by making your workplace a “fun place.” No matter how much you love your job, if it’s not fun, it’s bound to make you feel disengaged.

4. Keep it Flexible

If your team members are turning in their assignments on time, don’t be too hard on them about taking longer breaks. Everyone works differently; some may prefer working at a stretch and then taking a break, or working in bursts. Permit your employees to clock in the necessary hours on a flexible schedule. This ensures that you don’t compromise on the output and they can plan their time with ease. Not only this but flexibility in the workplace also improves employee satisfaction and productivity which helps organisations in attracting and developing skilled talent.

5. Enable an Exchange of Ideas

Explaining.

You must encourage employees to express their ideas, thus giving them a sense of belonging and achievement. For this, you can hold sessions where senior employees impart their knowledge to others. You can also enable platforms like brainstorming sessions for employees to share their ideas. Exchanging ideas, sharing expertise and learning experiences, solving issues, and developing a sense of togetherness inside an organisation all lead to innovation. As a result, exchange of ideas is increasingly being recognised as a key component of an organisation’s success.

6. Encourage their Well-being

Walking up the stairs.

Give your employees opportunities to keep fit and healthy. This is a surprisingly easy and cost-effective perk to offer. When employees are healthy, they are less stressed out, they take less sick days, and are more energised/productive at work. It’s a win-win for everyone involved. You can also start by providing mental health awareness campaigns as well as counselling to individuals who are suffering. You can discuss offering mental health benefits to your employees with your firm’s healthcare provider or an insurance company. This will help employees to keep a track on their wellbeing.

7. Make a Real Difference in Their Lives

Activities that add only a superficial value to employees’ lives are quite common. However, an engagement programme where you help employees take a decision about their children’s future can go a long way in helping you establish a long-term connection with them. This not only imbibes a sense of camaraderie but also a sense of loyalty in the workforce. Recently, K. Raheja held a career guidance workshop for the families of employees with Mentoria.

The session was a testimony to the fact that an employee’s commitment is affected by the work environment and whether or not they feel appreciated and respected at their workplace. Your employees will remain loyal and give their best if you express gratitude towards their efforts.
